Volunteers & Voters: The First World War and its Legacy

Saturday 12 November 2016

University of Worcester, Henwick Grove, Worcester, WR2 6AJ

Organised by The Women’s History Network, Midlands Region

The University of Worcester’s annual Women’s History Conference seeks papers for next year’s event under the heading of ‘ Volunteers and Voters’: The First World War and its Legacy.”

Debates about the significance of the First World War as an agent of social change for women have tended to focus upon women’s participation in national politics or the workplace. This conference instead, will explore women’s voluntary involvement in charities, organizations and local politics. It seeks to encourage explorations of how women entered the public sphere, seeking to shape, organise and influence other women’s lives during the conflict and in the years that followed when women were first enfranchised. The conference will also include an exhibition on ‘Influential Worcestershire Women, 1914-1934’.

We invite you to submit a paper based on your current research in the field of Volunteers and Voters. We welcome submissions regarding any country. Please send an abstract of 300 words to Dr Wendy Toon w.toon@worc.ac.uk by 31 July 2016.
