WW1 in the Vale now in Pershore

On 27, Oct 2014 | In Events | By Nicola Gauld

Adults and children alike gained such enjoyment from last week’s World War One in the Vale event, that the University of Worcester AHRC Voices of War & Peace Engagement team have been asked by Pershore Town Council to repeat the event in Pershore Library & Town Hall on 30 October 2014.

The FREE half term event will have a stronger focus on music and art and will feature arts activities and quizzes for young & old alike, led by Jaime Jackson of Salt Road and Sarah Millin, illustrator & artist.

Music will be provided by multi-instrumentalist Andy Casserley and the university’s own Professor Jean Webb.  Andy will also bring his collection of First World War musical instruments for the visitors to handle and maybe even play.  If you have ever wanted to see a folding harmonium of the kind played at the Western Front, now’s your chance.

It all takes place in Pershore Library and Town Hall on 30 October 2014, from 10.30am to 4pm.

From mid-day, arts workshops for children aged 4 years and upwards will be led by Sarah Millin, who comes to us straight from the Beeline Festival for Children’s Storytelling.  Jamie Jackson, Artistic Director of Salt Road, will lead workshops related to his new HLF-funded project focussing on Food Scarcity.

At 11am, Professor Maggie Andrews will deliver a brief introduction to the history of the First World War Home Front in the Vale and lead discussions on how you might get involved in community activity and research.

Exhibitors will include the Museum of the Worcestershire Regiment, Bishampton History Society, the University of Worcester, GirlGuiding Worcestershire and National Trust Croome Court.

Once more, we invite you to join us for WW1 eggless sponge cake and tea, hear performances of wartime music, and find out about life on the Home Front in the Vale including  convalescent hospitals, Belgian refugees, fruit growing, German POWs, land girls, child labourers and the daily lives of local families.
