SUMMARY:Performance: Will Harvey's War
DESCRIPTION:Born in Gloucestershire in 1888\, F.W. Harvey became one of England’s most popular war poets\, writing much of his work during the Great War.  To mark the centenary of the start of World War 1\, the Everyman Theatre presents a brand new adaptation of Harvey’s unpublished novel “Will Harvey’s War”.  Based on real-life facts from the life story of F.W. Harvey\, the novel and play nevertheless remain works of fiction and adventure. \nThe Everyman’s professional company of actors will appear alongside local performers and musicians (including the Cheltenham Silver Band) to create this epic tale of Gloucestershire\, the battle of the Somme and a final attempt at escape through the countryside of Westphalia. \nThis production marks the official launch of “Gloucestershire Remembers World War 1” – a programme of work presented by the Everyman Theatre\, The Wilson Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum\, The History Press\, Gloucestershire Archives and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. \n“Will Harvey’s War” is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. \nIt plays at the Everyman Theatre from Weds 30th July until Saturday 2nd August 2014.  Evening performances are at 7.45 pm.  There is a Saturday matinee on the 2nd at 2 o’clock.

SUMMARY:Talks: Beyond the Trenches\, the Legacy of Women in WW1
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the First World War thousands of men returned from the frontline suffering from shell-shock. Many were confined in Mental War Hospitals under martial law – with the risk of being sent on\, without appeal\, to asylums. SUMMARY:Performance: Finger Trigger Bullet Gun
DESCRIPTION:A Bosnian Serb finger pulled the trigger of the gun that started the First World War but who put the bullet in that gun? As Stan’s Cafe complete the process of remorselessly standing thousands of hand drawn domino figures in a precarious chain\, we are taken behind closed doors in Berlin\, Vienna and Belgrade to watch a conspiracy being built\, a conspiracy that will lead to Sarajevo\, a date with the Archduke\, and that gun loaded with that bullet having its trigger pulled by that finger. \nThis short\, taut play has been written especially for Stan’s Cafe by the Award Winning Serbian playwright Nenad Prokić. \nCo-commissioned by LIFT as part of After The War and 14-18 NOW\, WW1 Centenary Art Commissions (supported by the National Lottery Through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England).

SUMMARY:Exhibition: An Adaptable Trade: The Jewellery Quarter at War
DESCRIPTION:Before the outbreak of the War in 1914\, Birmingham’s jewellery industry was vast\, with an estimated 70\,000 people employed in manufacturing jewellery and supplying the trade.  By 1918 over 200 firms had closed\, and employee numbers halved – and yet Birmingham’s jewellery trade survived\, retaining much of its former dominance.  ‘An Adaptable Trade’ explores how the industry adapted to wartime austerity\, the impact on local people\, and the vital role played by women.  Looking in detail at three prominent Jewellery Quarter firms\, and illustrated with items loaned from family collections\, it reveals the extraordinary sacrifices made by a generation of Birmingham people. \nOpen Tuesday – Saturday 10.30am-5.00pm. Admission to exhibition is free although charge applies for admission to museum and factory tour. \nThe exhibition has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Working with Museums and Archives
DESCRIPTION:This one-off workshop organised by Writing West Midlands is an opportunity to explore how working with museums and archives can stimulate your writing. \nThe location is The Pen Museum\, site of a former Victorian pen factory and a treasure trove of literature and artefacts relating to the steel pen industry. \nDuring the 19th century\, it is said that 75 per cent of everything written in the world was with a ‘Birmingham’ pen. At one time\, there were around 100 factories in the Jewellery Quarter area. The development of the steel pen reduced the cost of writing and enabled the spread of literacy throughout the world. \nIn this World War 1 centenary year\, the workshop will draw on materials in the museum relating to the war\, and in particular the impact it had on women’s lives. \nThe workshop will be led by Fiona Joseph. Fiona is a teacher\, publisher and writer. She has written a biography of Beatrice Cadbury\, the radical daughter of the famous chocolate manufacturer\, and is currently working on a novel based on Cadbury women employees in WW1. \nCost: £23 -£28 \nTo book your place\, please contact our box office\, The Box\, on 0121 245 4455 or you can book online\, http://www.birmingham-box.co.uk/event/writing-workshop-working-with-museums-and-archives/

SUMMARY:Performance: Private Peaceful
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year\, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate\, Michael Morpurgo. Presented by Scamp Theatre and Fiery Angel and directed by Simon Reade. \nPrivate Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful\, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly\, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. \nMorpugo’s inspiration for the book came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. \n“The horrors of war and the joyfulness of life are bound up together in this magnificent show.”\nThe Scotsman \n“Morpurgo’s magic\, a masterly adaptation by Simon Reade …. This is one hour of your own life you will never forget.”\nDaily Mail

SUMMARY:Performance: War Correspondents
DESCRIPTION:War Correspondents is the second song theatre performance created by composer Helen Chadwick and choreographer and co-founder of Frantic Assembly\, Steven Hoggett\, (Oliver award winner for Black Watch) following the success of Dalston Songs commissioned by the Royal Opera House. \nTestimony\, singing and choreography fuse into a multi-disciplined performance. \nWhilst reporting the outbreak of war\, a journalist is held at gunpoint\, caught in the no-man’s land between two nations. Stories and life changing experiences of war journalists create a song cycle performance threaded with extracts of the interviews to bring to life the horror\, pain\, courage and the strength of friendship – the bearable and the worst of war. \nHelen and Designer Miriam Nabarro have interviewed war correspondents covering Iraq\, Chechnya\, Georgia\, Afghanistan\, Liberia and Bosnia\, including Giuliana Sgrena who was taken hostage in Fallujah\, Iraq\, and subsequently shot at by the US army. \n“Pierces the heart”\nEvening Standard on Dalston Songs \n“Chadwick is an exquisite find.”\nThe Guardian

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Tom\, Frank and May - One Family's Story
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merry and his wife Elizabeth lived at Blakesley Hall from 1901 to 1932. Their three children\, Tom\, Frank and May\, all played a part in the struggle of the First World War. Tom was an officer in the Army Service Corps based at Rouen working in logistics\, Frank fought at Passchendaele with the Artists Rifles (and was wounded in the very action John Nash depicts in his famous painting ‘Over the Top’) and May enrolled in the Voluntary Aid Detachment\, working in a number of military hospitals\, caring for the wounded from the front. Through photographs\, medals and letters from the family’s archive\, visitors to Blakesley Hall can discover the true effect of this conflict on one family. \nThe exhibition includes a short film\, along with an interactive trench and uniforms/costumes for our younger visitors. \nEntrance is included in the ticket price to the Hall. \nThe exhibition has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Last Post
DESCRIPTION:A poignant new free exhibition\, Last Post: Remembering the First World War\, will explore the effect of the events of 1914-18 on the Post Office\, its people and the contribution of postal communications to the war effort. It will be on display at the Coalbrookdale Gallery\, adjacent to Enginuity Friday 11 April 2014 until Friday 27 March 2015. \nBefore 1914 Post Office communications were vital to everyday life through the telegraph\, telephone and postal systems. At the outbreak of war\, the Post Office\, as one of the biggest businesses in the world\, contributed to military operations on a scale never seen before\, providing a vital means of communication between the fighting fronts and the home front. Tens of thousands of Post Office workers fought in the war and over 8\,500 were killed. \nCurated by the British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) in partnership with the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust\, the exhibition will showcase objects of military and postal importance and include stories from a Shropshire perspective. \nThe exhibition encompasses a variety of themes that bring to life the importance of human contact and communication during a time of great suffering and uncertainty. The themes will include communications both at home and on the frontline and the working lives of people involved in the postal service during the war\, including those of women on War Work. \nA nationwide touring exhibition of Last Post: Remembering the First World War will run in parallel to the exhibition at Coalbrookdale. \nLast Post: Remembering the First World War will be open Monday to Friday from 10am until 5pm at the Coalbrookdale Gallery\, entry is free.
