SUMMARY:Performance: Foreign Fields with The Play House
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Fields is a new piece of children’s theatre created by The Play House theatre in education company to mark the centenary of WW1. It uses research by the Archives and Heritage Service at the Library of Birmingham to explore how the war in Europe affected the lives of people in Birmingham. \nBased on the experiences of real people and actual events logged in the archive\, it tells the story of Brummie Herbert Owens and Belgian refugee Elisa de Haes who work in Hudson’s whistle factory\, making the whistles that were used to signal troops to go over the top. When Herbert is conscripted to fight at the front\, he has an important decision to make about his future and whether Elisa will be part of it. \nFor children aged 8-11 \nThe Play House is a respected educational theatre company which was established over 25 years ago and which enjoys a strong local profile.  Each year the company delivers over 1\,000 sessions to groups of children and young people and involves nearly 25\,000 participants in its activities\, largely within Birmingham and the West Midlands.  The Play House provides a dynamic and accessible theatrical resource that brings the curriculum to life and literally presents culture on the doorstep\, for teachers and pupils alike. \nA FREE event. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Rebel Visions: The War Art of CRW Nevinson
DESCRIPTION:The powerful art and contradictory personality of British war artist Richard Nevinson will be explored in this ground breaking exhibition – the centrepiece of our autumn programme. Famous for his dramatic\, often haunting images of the battlefield and its soldiers\, Nevinson’s arresting paintings\, drawings\, prints and posters also acknowledged the sometimes unpalatable effects war had on British society. Always a rebel\, he produced work that ranged in variety from official war propaganda to anti-war condemnation – some of which was censored. With major paintings and key drawings and prints lent by major UK public and private collections\, including Tate\, the Imperial War Museum and the British Museum\, this exhibition will be accompanied by a full programme of related lectures\, talks and other exciting events.

SUMMARY:Symposium: WW1 and children - myths\, images and engagement
DESCRIPTION:The centenary of the outbreak of the First World War has led to a proliferation of television programmes\, publications\, museum exhibitions and heritage events. Yet\, despite the government decision to fund school children to visit the battlefields\, there is a concern that perhaps many of the WW1 commemoration activities have not enthralled many young people. This symposium aims to bring together academics working on the history and literature of children and Ww1 with practitioners who work with young people in a variety of settings. Presentations and discussions will explore a wide range of topics including: the lives of children at school in WW1\, the images and myths that surround children in literature and the strategies and tactics used by those working in museums\, youth organisations or with schools to engage young people in the history of the conflict. \nThere is no charge for this event which is part of Institute of Humanities & Creative Arts Worcester Week. To book a place please contact John Powell: john.powell@worc.ac.uk \n

SUMMARY:Performance: Sam Sweeney's Fiddle - Made in the Great War
DESCRIPTION:In 2009 Sam Sweeney\, fiddle player with Bellowhead\, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard. \nResearch revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. \nHe had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left unfinished in his workshop. \nThe pieces were given to his daughter Rose in a manila envelope\, as a memory of her father. She kept them all her life. On her death they were sent to an auction house. The parts were bought and the violin was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. \nThe fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. \nDiscovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multi-media performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete\, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. \nCollaborating with award-winning story-teller Hugh Lupton\, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron\, as well as Bellowhead lighting designer Emma Thompson who has developed set\, projections and lighting for the show\, Made in the Great War will bring the reality of World War I into 2014\, as Sam performs the show with the actual fiddle made by non-returning World War I soldier Richard Howard.
