SUMMARY:Performance: Talbot House: A Home from Home
DESCRIPTION:During the Great War\, Talbot House in Poperinge\, Belgium\, a few short miles behind the front line\, became a haven for thousands of allied troops – a ‘home from home’ where they enjoyed some home comforts and remembered the men that they really were. Run by a diminutive chaplain named Tubby Clayton the house became known by its army signaller’s code of Toc H and ultimately would be the inspiration for the association with that name. \nThis play\, written by Peter Gill and aimed at a family audience\, recreates the humour\, music and wonderful atmosphere of this inspirational house. \nTo book tickets please visit the mac website

SUMMARY:Conference: Nonconformist Responses to the First World War
DESCRIPTION:Only in 1871\, with the repeal of the Test Acts\, were nonconformists allowed to attend universities in England and Wales and join the medical and legal professions. This ushered in a period\, for some groups\, of a closer relationship with the State where nonconformists could play their part in civic society as full citizens. The First World War fractured that relationship for those groups with issues surrounding the boundaries of State power\, or opposed to war. Quakers\, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists are all known\, amongst other nonconformist groups\, for refusing to bear arms; their attitudes to Government changed particularly after the introduction of conscription in 1916. \nHowever\, while in terms of faith and belief\, the stance seemed clear\, religious organisations could be pragmatic and individual members took divergent paths. One third of eligible Quaker men joined the armed forces during the First World War\, some served as non-combatants; others were imprisoned for their conscientious objection.  Nonconformist families were often divided over their responses to the War. \nThis conference is jointly organised by the Centre for Postgraduate Quaker Studies at Woodbrooke and the Quaker Studies Research Association.

SUMMARY:Discussion: 100 Years of Tear Gas
DESCRIPTION:This panel will bring together academics\, activists and experts to discuss the military\, policing\, legal\, commercial and medical aspects of tear gas\, both in historic and more contemporary contexts. First used in 1914\, tear gas is a legacy of WWI\, developed as a chemical weapon for military use\, then misleadingly rebranded as a “non-lethal” weapon used to repress social protests around the world. \nWe will also explore how citizens have developed DIY gas mask instructions and home remedies\, circulated transnationally in print and online\, allowing for new kinds of ad-hoc “amateur practices” to emerge (i.e citizen journalists\, citizen scientists\, citizen lawyers). \nModerator: Dr. Dima Saber\, Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research\, Birmingham City University \nPanelists: \n\nNeil Corney – Omega Research Foundation\nNeil researches and writes on a wide variety of military\, security and police issues\, including the testing and trade of ‘less lethal’ weapons\, and the human rights and health implications of their use.\nJohn Horne – University of Birmingham / Tear Gas Research Connection\nJohn is a PhD student researching representations of state violence in contemporary visual culture. He is a member of Bahrain Watch and works with Anna as co-coordinator of the Connecting Tear Gas Research initiative.\nAla’a Shehabi – Bahrain Watch\nAla’a is an academic and activist who has been a firsthand witness to the often deadly use of tear gas in Bahrain to repress the pro-democracy movement. With Bahrain Watch she’s also worked to document its misuse and campaigned to prevent further exports of tear gas to Bahrain.\n\nWho should attend\nAcademics\, activists\, experts\, students and professionals interested in exploring issues around social activism\, tear gas production and use around the world and media for social change. This event is organised as part of the AHRC funded WW1 Engagement Centre Voices of War & Peace and the Connecting Tear Gas Research initiative and is hosted by the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University. Refreshments will be served. \nFor more details contact Dima Saber on 0121 331 7280 or @dimalb \nTo book your free place click here \nPicture by Ahmed Al-Fardan\, Bahrain

SUMMARY:One in six: the Indian subcontinent and the First World War
DESCRIPTION:The National Archives together with Voices of War and Peace invites you to explore the South Asian contribution to the First World War through a programme of events at the Library of Birmingham. \nOne hundred years ago\, undivided India provided Britain with a massive volunteer army in its hour of need. From 1914-1918 close to 1.5 million Indians served\, fighting in all the major theatres of war from Flanders Fields in Belgium to the Mesopotamian oil fields of present day Iraq. One in six of the service personnel under British command was from the Indian subcontinent. Because of this there are many connections to be made between Britain’s South Asian communities and this landmark conflict. \n  \nTalk: Indian soldiers\, the British Army and the First World War \nWednesday 15 April 2015\, 12.00-13.00\, Heritage Learning Space\, Floor 4 \nWilliam Spencer – Principal Military Specialist\, The National Archives \nJahan Mahmood – Independent military historian. \nWhat was the contribution of Indian soldiers to the British Army in the First World War? \nFurther information:  nationalarchives.gov.uk/Birmingham-fww \nBooking: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/one-in-six-the-indian-subcontinent-and-the-first-world-war-tickets-16016214930 \n  \nDrop-in session: your heritage\, your history with The National Archives \nWednesday 15 April 2015\, 13.00-16.00\, Book Rotunda \nDo you have family stories about India and the First World War that you would like to share? SUMMARY:Performance: Remembering the 1914 Christmas Truce
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the success of the First World War commemorative programme of events in August\, Birmingham City Council is continuing to commemorate the First World War with an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Truce of 1914. \nLate on Christmas Eve 1914\, men of the British Expeditionary Force heard the German soldiers singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. \nMessages began to be shouted between the trenches. The following day\, British and German soldiers met in No Man’s Land and exchanged gifts\, took photographs and some played football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. \nSome officers viewed the truce as a chance to improve living conditions in the trenches\, while others worried that such unwarlike behaviour would undermine fighting spirit. \nThe High Commands on both sides took measures to ensure such fraternisation would not happen again\, and the 1914 Christmas Truce remained a unique event on the Western Front. \nBirmingham Cathedral Choir and Frankfurt Cathedral Choir will join together singing Christmas songs in English and German to mark the iconic moment in World History when ordinary soldiers from opposing nations were united in the desire for peace in a time of conflict. \nImagineer Productions will perform War Bride a visual / physical choreographed performance with an emotive underscore representing ideas of peace and reconciliation. \nAndrew Hamilton has written a book about his Grandfather’s experience of the Christmas Truce in the trenches and will be reading an excerpt at the event. \nThe Dean of Birmingham Cathedral\, Catherine Ogle will say prayers at the event and the Deputy Mayor of Frankfurt\, Michael Paris will also attend alongside the Lord Mayor of Birmingham\, Councillor Shafique Shah. \nThe event will take place in Cathedral Green\, Birmingham Cathedral with two performances: \n6.30pm and 8.00pm \nThe event is free \n  \n

SUMMARY:Book launch: Black Poppies by Stephen Bourne
DESCRIPTION:Talk and discussion with the author Stephen Bourne to celebrate the launch of his book Black Poppies\, published by The History Press. \nIn 1914 Britain was home to at least 10\,000 black Britons\, many of African and West Indian heritage. Most of them were loyal to the ‘mother country’ when the First World War broke out. Despite being discouraged from serving in the British Army\, men managed to join all branches of the forces\, while black communities contributed to the war effort on the home front. By 1918 it is estimated that Britain’s black population had trebled to 30\,000\, as many black servicemen who had fought for Britain decided to make it their home. It was far from a happy ending\, however\, as they and their families often came under attack from white ex-servicemen and civilians increasingly resentful of their presence. With first-hand accounts and original photographs\, Black Poppies is the essential guide to the military and civilian wartime experiences of black men and women\, from the trenches to the music halls. It is intended as a companion to Stephen Bourne’s previous books published by The History Press: Mother Country: Britain’s Black Community on the Home Front 1939–45 and The Motherland Calls: Britain’s Black Servicemen and Women 1939–45. \nA FREE event. SUMMARY:Performance: The Christmas Truce
DESCRIPTION:December 1914. As families across Europe gather to celebrate Christmas\, a generation of young men find themselves far away from their loved ones in the trenches of the Western Front. There they face a world seemingly devoid of any peace or goodwill. But on Christmas Eve 1914\, as the men of the Warwickshire Regiment shelter in their trenches\, something astonishing happens. \nAcross no-man’s land they hear music. The German soldiers are singing Christmas carols; the same carols their families are listening to\, hundreds of miles away in Birmingham\, Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Leaving their trenches\, carrying only their courage and their humanity\, they go to meet their enemies; not to fight\, but talk\, to exchange gifts\, to celebrate Christmas. And the next day\, together\, they play an unforgettable game of football. \nInspired by real events of exactly 100 years ago\, RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman directs Phil Porter’s uplifting new play for families that celebrates a remarkable Christmas story. \nRecommended for ages 9+
