BIRMINGHAM’S HEALTH.

DIMINUTION OF INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.

The returns of the Medical Officer of Health for last week bear testimony to the welcome diminution in the epidemic of influenza. During the week there were only 21 deaths as compared with 55 in the previous week and 155 in the week ending 13 July.

The general death rate was also low, being 9.8 per 1,000 as against 14.9 the previous week and 8.2 in the corresponding week of last year. Infant mortality, too, was down to a rate of 58, only 19 babies under the age of one year dying. There were no deaths from measles or scarlet fever, but five persons succumbed to whooping cough and one to diphtheria.

The fresh notifications included 118 cases of measles, 18 of scarlet fever, and 16 of diphtheria.
