Event: Hahakar – The Agony. Paintings by Sumantra Sengupta: India and Indians in the Great War

On 23, May 2016 | In Events | By Nicola Gauld

A seminar, in situ, with artist Sumantra Sengupta and Jonathan Harris

Birmingham City University, Parkside Building, Ground Floor, near The Shell, at 4.15pm on Wednesday 25 May 2016

The First World War remains widely perceived in Britain to have been a European conflict with European consequences. However the involvement of India (then still part of the British Empire) and Indian combatants changes our perception of the War, its nature and global implications. Join the painter Sumantra Sengupta (Head of the School of Performing and Visual Arts, Shriv Nadar University, Noida, India) and Jonathan Harris (Head of Birmingham School of Art) for a discussion of Sumantra’s paintings and the wide range of issues they raise.
