The Diary of Dorothy Priest, October 18th 1914

I knew something good would happen yesterday.

As I was going to Church this morning I thought I would look at the paper on the Post Office door, but there were a good many men there and I was afraid of being late so I didn’t stop.  On the way back after church I went through and saw the official notice of good news from the sea.  Our new light cruiser HMS Undaunted and four destroyers engaged and sank four German destroyers, with slight damage to our ships and slight casualties.  Of course this is not a great naval victory, but it is something, and will help to restore confidence after the ‘Hawke’ disaster.
