The Diary of Dorothy Priest, September 13th 1914

Two additions of the Mail sold along the road today.  The Battle of the Marne has resulted in a great and important victory to us.

It seems that the British had to hold back the Germans at Mons, all alone, the French did not come up, and we were nearly wiped out.  We must have fought magnificently, retreating all the time, for we weren’t wiped out.  What a nation we are!  When we were retreating day-by-day, and the Germans were getting nearer-and-nearer to Paris, we did not give way to despair, and now the tide seems to have turned.  At least we do not appear to have any wild rejoicing.  Russia and Serbia are winning and the Australians are taking a German island east of New Guinea.  We are after the African colonies, too.
