A great life and death struggle is now going on in Belgium.  It says in the paper that someone writing from Berlin mentions the Crown prince’s funeral, and that another paper says he is alive.  The Kaiser is reported to have narrowly escaped capture near Moscow.

Hopeful news, but very little of it.  The King of Belgium is a fine man, going about among his soldiers as if he were one of themselves.  The King of Romania died a few days ago, not a bad thing as he was a pro-German.  The new King isn’t, or at any rate not, nearly as strong.

The Indians are in the fighting line!  How I should love to know what the first German who saw them said.  He would make a fine study for astonishment I should think.  The paper says there is no doubt now that we shall win.  There never was any doubt, we knew that we must win.  The question is how long shall we be?  I think we shall find it harder to beat them when they are in their own land than it is now they are in a foreign country that hates them, and where they are defending their homes.

The Times today published a review of the events of the month, consisting of maps showing the positions of the armies on different days.  In France we have done very well, also in Galicia, but in East Russia the Germans have advanced.  The whole situation seems to me to be satisfactory.
