COMMUNAL KITCHEN TO BE OPENED IN BIRMINGHAM

A meeting of the Birmingham  Food Economy Committee was held yesterday at Council House, under the presidency of Councillor Miss Martineau. It was resolved to establish a communal kitchen in Birmingham, but no decision was arrived at as to the locality, although it was intimated that it would be placed in one of the poorer districts. The kitchen is to be regarded in the nature of an experiment for the purpose of ascertaining whether there is a demand for them in Birmingham. A sub-committee was appointed to consider the details of the scheme and to make arrangements for the opening of the kitchen, which it is hoped will take place in about three weeks. The initial cost will be borne by the committee. It was also decided to give demonstrations in war-time cookery at all the educational cookery centres in the city. They will be for housewives, who are to be invited to attend through leaflets distributed to the children at the elementary schools. The demonstrations, it is expected, will commence shortly after Whitsuntide.
