International Artistic Creation during World War I

The cost of attendance is £25 for two days, or £15 for a single day. The fee includes morning and afternoon teas and coffees, and a delegate pack.

Bursaries are available for students, the unwaged or retired persons, musicians, writers, artists, and other workers within the creative and heritage industries. To apply for a bursary, please send a short paragraph on why you feel you would benefit from attending the symposium to commemorating-wwi@cardiff.ac.uk

The symposium forms part of the Commemorating WWI: Conflict and Creativity series, funded by an AHRC Cultural Encounters Fellowship, and runs alongside a series of public engagement events:

A screening of Geoffrey Malins’s and J B McDowell’s 1916 silent film The Battle of the Somme with live orchestral accompaniment by the Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, playing a score by Laura Rossi. The event will begin with a discussion of propaganda and film led by Cardiff academics Dr Toby Thacker (History) and Dr John Jewell (Journalism), chaired by renowned Welsh writer, Jon Gower. Cardiff University Special collections will be exhibiting archival holdings pertaining to the First World War in St David’s Hall.

From War to Peace: Music of Reconciliation and Hope
