BIRMINGHAM HEALTH RETURNS.

The weekly returns of the Medical Officer of Health show that the health of the citizens of Birmingham continues satisfactory. The number of deaths last week was 165, equal to a rate of 9.2 per thousand. For the previous week the rate was 7.9 per thousand, the lowest since the extension of the city. There were three deaths from measles last week and one from scarlet fever. The number of cases of measles notified shows substantial decrease, probably due to the fact that the schools have been closed. The total was 173, as against 234. Diphtheria cases also showed a decrease, the number being 9, as against 13. Scarlet fever cases numbered 34, as against 31. There were 14 deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis, an increase of 2. Two cases of whooping cough were notified from the schools, as against 20 in the previous week, and of chicken-pox 9, as against 45. The holidays are responsible for the decrease. There were 180 patients in the city scarlet fever ward, as against 185, and in the diphtheria war 56, against 67. The patients in the city sanatoria numbered 568, a decrease of 18 on the week.
