The Diary of Dorothy Priest, March 9th 1915

There was to be a mighty German submarine blockade of England beginning on February 18th but I rather think the Germans have suffered from it more than we have, so far anyway.

Now our fleet, some of it at least, is halfway up the Dardanelles bombarding Turkey, who is getting rather sick of the Kaiser and the war.  Our last new battleship, Queen Elizabeth, otherwise known as Black Bess, is there and some of the French ships too.  Pat is at Botley [Oxfordshire] and has helped to give cigarettes to the soldiers somewhere down there.  I have practically joined the KN company of the Women’s Volunteer Service.  The first drill was last night.  The second Red Cross exam is in a fortnight, we have had classes now for three weeks.  Dr. Aldridge seems to think we shall all be needed.  I have given my name into the hospital if I am wanted but I am afraid I should not pass the doctor.
