Research Bursary Opportunity

The first female House Surgeon at Worcester General Infirmary

Project Details

Staff at the George Marshall Medical Museum and The Infirmary are looking for a Researcher to investigate the first female House Surgeon at Worcester General Infirmary. Martha Stewart arrived in 1915 and left almost immediately. She was appointed 1st February 1915 and tendered resignation on request of the staff in April of the same year without any reason given in the Board minutes. The nature of her appointment and departure will be explored through research into the former Worcester Royal Infirmary’s archives at The Hive, archives at the George Marshall Medical Museum and online archives via websites like Ancestry.co.uk.

The Researcher will:

  • Produce a research report about Martha Stewart;
  • Theme and edit research for printing in a mini publication; and
  • Theme and edit research for display on a pop-up banner to be toured around different sites.

There will also be an opportunity to provide a talk about the research.

This project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and part of the larger Worcestershire World War 100 partnership with heritage organisations and attractions in Worcestershire. To find out about the project visit: www.ww1worcestershire.co.uk.

The found research will enable the broader picture of women working in ‘male-oriented’ roles at this time to be shared, and enable visitors to comment on the subject matter through websites and social media, display panels at the two medical museums, and a ‘Debating Space’ at The Infirmary.

Supervision

The Researcher will have regular supervision sessions with Dr. Frank Crompton, Associate Fellow at the University of Birmingham Centre for the History of Medicine, and longstanding lecturer and PhD supervisor for the University of Worcester.

To apply for this role please send a current CV and sample of your writing no longer than 2 sides A4 from a completed research document (e.g. dissertation, essay, published article) to Mark Macleod, Head of The Infirmary at m.macleod@worc.ac.uk or The Infirmary, University of Worcester, Castle Street, Worcester, WR1 3AS by 5pm on Friday 13th February, 2015.
