The Diary of Dorothy Priest, January 26th 1915

The Mail went mad yesterday because on Sunday the Hun “babykillers” came out into the North Sea to raid the British coast again.

This time while everyone was at Church.  Only as it happened HMS Lion, Tiger and New Zealand and one or two others happened to be just handy to stop their little game.  The Germans had left their big guns at home and carried instead a number of smaller ones, not much good in a sea fight against battleships, and when they saw ours they returned full speed.  But we caught them up, sank the Blücher and damaged the others so much that they won’t attempt any more babykilling just yet.  And then, and THEN, those German liars say that WE retreated!!!  I knew they perverted the truth, but such a downright lie——–.  This is the first “big ships” fight in the North Sea.  The Lion’s motto painted on her bows is “Omnes veniant” which has been translated “Let ‘em all come”.  The “Sketch” says our attitude towards the Germans should be the Beatty – tude.  Sunday was Lord Fisher’s birthday, he had good news for it.
