The Diary of Dorothy Priest, January 1st 1915

This is the first thing I have written this year.  We have lost another battle ship.

HMS Formidable of the latest pre-dreadnought pattern laid down in March 189.. and launched the same year and finished in 1901, has been submarined or torpedoed, it is not known which, and most of the men on board have gone down with her.  On land I believe we have not done badly during the last week.  It was thought that the Germans had something up their sleeve for us for Christmas Day but nothing big did happen.  Seven of our airmen raided Cuxhaven doing a fair amount of damage and six returned safely.  It was at first thought that the seventh, Flight Commander F. Hewlett, was killed or taken prisoner, but it appears that he was picked up at sea by a trawler and taken to Holland.  I heard today that there are 1,200 soldiers in Colwyn Bay.
