All the papers are full of Antwerp and the brave deeds of the sailors.  I must read about it tomorrow.

This Antwerp business is very serious and I have no one to talk it over with properly.  The reason given for the evacuation is that the German guns are much more powerful than the Antwerp fort guns.  I should have thought that we could have held out longer.  Either the guns are very powerful, or there is some trap, or the Generals think it is much better not to have Antwerp to defend.  If it has been left too soon, if they have made a mistake, won’t K [Kitchener] give them a mauvais quatre d’heure [a brief unpleasant experience].
