WW1 commemorative activities in Leintwardine

On 09, Oct 2014 | In Events | By Nicola Gauld

October 16-20 sees the culmination of a First World War commemorative project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, ‘The impact of the First World War on Leintwardine and neighbouring villages’.

Residents from Leintwardine and the local history society have worked together to produce a series of events and activities. At the centre of the project are the exhibitions ‘Last orders: families on the brink of war’ and ‘Tell them back home’. The exhibitions include a section on the VAD hospital, which demonstrates how early the village was anticipating a need for medical care. Other sections of the exhibition focus on the hospital’s links to Minnesota and Lincolnshire. The wartime experience of three local brothers, the village newspaper, and the village situation following the end of the war are also explored.

The commemorative activities will finish on October 19 in St Mary’s Church with a concert performed by professional and amateur locals.
